Monthly Subsurface Temperatures around Japan Term: from January 1982 to latest Area: 15.0N - 49.0N, 117.0E - 159.0E, 0.1 degree x 0.1 degree Method: Meteorological Research Institute Multivariate Ocean Variational Estimation system (MOVE/MRI.COM) Explanation: Subsurface temperatures are estimated by the numerical ocean data assimilation model (Usui et al., 2006). Data Format: One data file consists of 1369 records, one header record and 1368 data records. The header record contains the year and month in four digits each from the left. The grid point values (GPVs) at a depth of 50m are stored on a 342-record block from 2nd record, those at a depth of 100m on the next block from 344th record, those at a depth of 200m on the 3rd block from 686th record, and those at a depth of 400m on the last block from 1028th record. The depth information is stored in three digits on the first record of each 342-record block. The GPVs on the grids along 49.0N are stored on the 2nd record of the block, those along 48.9N are on the 3rd record of the block, and those along 15.0N are on the 342nd record of the block. Each record contains the 421 GPVs from 117.0E to 159.0E at the interval of 0.1 degree in longitude. Each GPV domains four digits in the unit of 0.01 degree Celsius. The GPV is 9999, if the temperature is not determined or the grid point is below the bottom of the ocean. References: Usui, N., S. Ishizaki, Y. Fujii, H. Tsujino, T. Yasuda, M.
